Chinchillas listed here have just arrived at Second Chance Chins, and are not yet ready for adoption.  Each chinchilla will be evaluated for re-homing on a case-by-case basis.  Chinchillas arriving at Second Chance Chins are monitored closely for at least 30 days before being made available for adoption.  Once a decision to re-home a chinchilla listed here has been made, he or she will be moved to the available for adoption page.

Pistachio is an absolutely adorable male TOV (Touch Of Velvet) white mosaic.  He is a very small chinchilla, weighing only about 500 grams when he arrived.  He is full-grown, and is not undernourished, it's just his genetics that make him so small.  Pistachio was born approximately December, 2006 and came to Second Chance Chins on June 22, 2010.  Pistachio was given as a gift to a young child and mom just didn't have time to give him the attention he needed and deserves.  Pistachio enjoys running on the Chin Spin wheel in his new cage here with us, as well as hamming it up for the camera.  He also very quickly figured out our nightly routine of treat time!  Pistachio will be going to one of our wonderful foster homes for a little extra one-on-one attention.

Sprite and Ginger are littermate sisters who came to us on April 10, 2010, with the intention they'd be transferred directly to another rescue out of state.  One look at Sprite's teeth and we knew she wasn't going anywhere.  She has some serious dental issues and we're working with our terrific vet as well as giving her vitamin C and calcium supplements.  Her top incisors have a gap between them, and her lower incisors grow very quickly.  When the lowers get longer, they fan out into a "V" shape, making it nearly impossible for her to eat on her own.  Her incisor roots have also grown too long, as well as the roots of two of her molars.  At her first dental visit, she had two molars that were quite loose.  Those have now come out on their own.  We're feeding Sprite several times daily with a special formula for hand feeding called Critical Care.  This helps maintain her while she's not able to eat much on her own.  We have seen her eating pellets on her own recently which is wonderful!  The girls were born on April 15, 2004.  Ginger is an ebony, and Sprite is a standard gray.  They enjoy sleeping together in their house and running on their flying saucer wheel.  We're hopeful that we can eventually place Sprite and Ginger into an experienced home where Sprite can continue to get the special care her dental issues are going to require.  In their photos, Sprite is on the left, Ginger is on the right.

Nechtan came to us on March 28, 2010.  His former owner was no longer able to keep him due to the need to downsize her living space because of finances.  Nechtan had a cage mate named Wyllow, who sadly passed away a few days before he came to stay with us.  Nechtan was born January 9, 2001 and is a handsome homo beige.  Considering all the changes that have taken place in Nechtan's life in the past couple weeks, he's doing amazingly well.  We will give him a little time to settle in before we take his photos.

Snickers is a hetero beige female who was born in approximately 2003 or 2004.  Snickers is a little skittish, and does chew her fur when she is stressed.  We hope that she will stop once she's completely settled in with us (and continue to not chew when she goes to her new home!).  Snickers has the most wonderfully speckled ears and enjoys sleeping tucked away in her large hidey house.  Snickers came to us on March 11, 2010 and has had a little difficulty settling in with us, which is why we've not taken her photos yet.  We want to be sure she's comfortable before we stick a camera in her face!

Dusty is an absolutely gorgeous dark ebony female, born in November, 2006.  Dusty came to us on March 9, 2010 because her former owner did not have the room to provide a separate cage for her so that she wouldn't become pregnant again.  Dusty is currently nursing two adorable little girls, Ember and Sahara who were born on March 7, 2010.  Dusty was with her mate after her kits were born, so she will be staying with us until at least June 30, 2010, so we can be sure she's not expecting again.  Dusty is a very good mom and has a sweet and laid back personality.  UPDATE 6/24/10:  Dusty is unfortunately pregnant again.  She is due any day now, and we're keeping a close eye on her.  We're hoping for only one kit this time, but the amount of weight she's gained and where we're feeling movement inside her leads us to believe she has at least two.  We've been giving Dusty some supplements to help her during her back to back pregnancies, and she seems to be doing very well.  We've assured Dusty that this is the last time she has to go through this.  UPDATE 6/26/10:  The kits have arrived!  We arrived home from some errands on June 26 to find one newly born and still wet kit.  Not quite expecting Dusty to give birth for a few days, she was still in her regular cage.  We scrambled to get her into the maternity cage, which was up from the basement, but not yet together and ready for her.  The first kit we presume was born around 12:15-12:20pm.  At 1:17, we witnessed the birth of kit number two!  Both kits are we believe tan.  They are both girls and are identical twins.  We were able to take a video of the second kit being born, and will be posting it here on our website once we have time to edit and prepare it.
